Together, Fritz and Agnes Hasselbach have elevated the Gunderloch estate
to the highest level of quality in Germany. The couple took over management
in 1986, and since then Gunderloch has earned perfect 100-point ratings
for its TBAs from 1992, 1996 and 2001. The heart of the estate is 21 acres
of Riesling in the Nackenheim Rothenberg vineyard. Gunderloch's 2001s
were sublime; its 2002s come very close in quality and represent one of
the finest ranges from the vintage. I even thought the Spätlese in
2002 surpassed the '01 in sheer harmony and finesse. Unless noted, these
wines are enjoyable now for their primar fruit flavors, yet there is no
hurry to drink them. They will develop over the next two decades.-(BS)
