von Hövel (Saar valley)

Gunderloch (Rheinhessen region)

publication date: OCt. 10, 2006:

Gunderloch, Riesling trocken 2005 Rheinhessen 15.5 Drink 2006-08
Firm nose, very upright, ramrod straight wine with a hint of bitterness on the finish. A little dissolved spritz perceptible. Quite austere. 12%

Gunderloch, Nierstein Pettenthal 2005 Rheinhessen 16 Drink 2006-09
Like the wine immediately below, this is the Gunderloch equivalent of a Grosses Gewächs, sold as a QbA even though it is well over 100 Oechsle. Assertive slightly peppery nose. Quite spicy and much more mellow on the palate than the nose - very broad and almost rich. Contracts a bit on the finish to show some hardness but I could imagine enjoying this with slices of salami. Quite long with a little alcohol on the finish. A little sweetness perceptible. 13%

Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg 2005 Rheinhessen 17.5 Drink 2006-10
What a contrast to the Pettenthal! Such opulence yet firmness on the nose. Lychees and a hint of grapefruit but overall very rich. Yet well struictured and firm. A lovely drink. I’ll take this to the table for our turbot tonight. Quite a tingle and, like the Pettenthal, not bone dry by any means. Very long and again obviously well over 100 Oechsle.13%

Gunderloch, Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett 2005 Rheinhessen 16 Drink 2007-10
Crackling fresh, this wine smells dry. Lots of racy acidity and a good balance of fruit. Still a little astringent on the finish. I’d wait a month or two before enjoying this with food. 11%

Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Spätlese 2005 Rheinhessen 17 Drink 2006-11
Full, opulent and very confident nose. Really steaming along in a familiar mode here - white peach and nectarine flavours. Great balance and lovely crackling acidity. Very long, 8.5%

Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel No 08 2005 Rheinhessen 17 Drink 2008-15
Quite deep gold. Still much more muted on the nose than the Spätlese but of course richer and sweeter - though great lime cordial-like acidity. Not delicate - quite big! I would wait awhile for this to unfurl, but it lacks the tension of the Spätlese. 8.5%

Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Auslese No 03 2005 Rheinhessen 17 Drink 2008-12
Moderately piercing nose with strong lime cordial notes and lots of passion fruit and white peach. Acidity not that dominant - already possible to sip and enjoy even if it’s not nearly ready. I tasted this on a different occasion from the Goldkapsel but still noted that lime cordial element. 9.5%

Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Beerenauslese No 14 2005 Rheinhessen 17.5 Drink 2009-17
Rich, hazelnuts, heady and almost syrupy. Hints of elderflower. Very vibrant but with a hint of glucose syrup. Very fresh but not massively heavy. 9%

Gunderloch, Nackenheim Rothenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese No 15 2005 Rheinhessen 18.5 Drink 2010-20
Mid golden amber. Peachy and glorious on the nose. Lots of lime-like acidity. Roundly smooth textured fruit but an amazing level of acidity too. Seems more delicate than the Beerenauslese. 7%

Robert Weil (Rheingau region)

publication date: OCt. 10, 2006

Robert Weil, Rheingau Riesling dry 2005 Rheingau 16 Drink 2006-08
Light, very direct, lime juice nose. Some perceptible sweetness or at rather notably ripe fruit. Very tingly, refreshing finish. East drink, with or without food. 12% alc.

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Dry Erstes Gewächs (Grand Cru) 2005 Rheingau 18 Drink 2007-11
Very exotic nose. Then unusually opulent palate. This spreads itself right across the palate - very much more than conventional Riesling. This is ambitious dry white wine!

Robert Weil, Rheingau Riesling Kabinett 2005 Rheingau 16.5 Drink 2007-11
Intense with lots of extract and rich passion fruit flavours. Delicate finish. Easy, bright, zingy fruit. Long. 10% alc.

Robert Weil, Rheingau Riesling Spätlese 2005 Rheingau 17 Drink 2008-13
Minerals and introversion on the nose - much less evolved than the Kabinett and QbA. Sinewy build and very refreshing with remarkably bright acidity. 9.5% alc.

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese 2005 Rheingau 17.5 Drink 2009-15
Reticent nose, then knife-edge acidity and zest in the lime spectrum at present. Very well balanced and good structure for long ageing. Layered and promising. 8.5% alc.

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Auslese 2005 Rheingau 18 Drink 2010-18
Pale, honeyed nose with very marked acidity - passion fruit quality with some astringence on the finish. Very zesty - almost like grapefruit zest. Very lively, tastes almost like the cusp of Spätlese and Auslese.

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Auslese Goldkapsel 2005 Rheingau 18.5 Drink 2008-18
Very rich and full and racy - exceptionally sweet and knife edge stuff with strong botrytis elements. Very neat finish with vibration on it. Musical wine. Amazingly unctuous. 8% alc.

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Beerenauslese 2005 Rheingau 18+ Drink 2012-20
Pale straw. Opulent honeyed nose, like lime marmalade. Surprisingly delicate for a Beerenauslese with very marked acidity. Delicate texture - dances, not at all syrupy.

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Beerenauslese Goldkapsel 2005 Rheingau 19.5 Drink 2010-25
Pale golden tawny. Wonderful ethereal delicacy on the nose - this flies out of the glass. A bit of dried apricot fruit and so clean on the finish. Long and super brisk yet with acacia honey notes under neath, Sweetness and yet fabulously integrated acidity. 7.5%

Robert Weil, Kiedrich Gräfenberg Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 2005 Rheingau 19.5 Drink 2012-30
Very deep copper. Intense and complex nose - a very big step up from the Beerenauslese. Super-thick syrup with lime blossom notes. Yet wonderful acidity and zest. Great length. Molten grapes with a hint of beeswax. Very clean and fresh.
